25/09/08_AnnaM_IKEA East coast action

We’ve designed an experiential piece to assist IKEA Edinburgh in their bid to reach a wider audience on Scotland’s East coast. The promotion itself is to highlight the new catalogue issue and drive footfall to the Edinburgh store.

Our 10ft catalogues will be coming to Edinburgh, Stirling, Dunfermline, Livingston, Dundee and Aberdeen over the next two months on consecutive weekends.

Our design created a booth from the oversized catalogues which we created providing seating inside to view three simultaneous projections. The visuals show the new Ikea product range via an animated reel which we commissioned. Quality, price and value for money brand messages have been incorporated into the visuals for the client. The music which accompanies the visuals was also commissioned purely for this project, changing in tone throughout to suit the mood of the products.

11/09/08_TimW_World Championships - close but no cigar!

tim-wilcox-stand.jpg

Pra Loup in southern France was host to the 2008 World Masters Mountain Bike Championships.  860 competitors came from 29 countries around the globe, Chile, South Africa, USA, Japan, New Zealand, Australia and of course sunny Scotland.

I made the 3288mile round trip to try and come home with the rainbow stripes and title of World Masters Champion.

Tuesday was course inspection. The course was fast and open on the top section, 40mph off camber sweeping corners lead you down into the steep pine forest in the mid section, this is where the track became more technical with large drops and hundreds of hidden roots due to the thick dust. The bottom of the track picked up speed again, still in the trees and requiring a careful choice of line that needed to be executed with precision or the consequences were painful. A 30ft jump greeted you into the finish arena to conclude your run.

Wednesday and Thursday was official practice which flew by rather quickly, 30 degrees and blue skies everyday. All the riders were enjoying the course and the pits had a good buzz to them.

Friday came and it was qualifying run time. I’d been seeded in behind the 07 World Champ Shaums March from USA (no pressure). Feeling nervous at the start, I looked back up the hill as Shaums left the start hut, I never like watching other riders leave the start. Two pedal strokes and into a fast compression, you exit doing around 35mph and that sets your pace for the rest of the run. I’d decided not to pedal for my whole run. The course was more about less braking and carrying speed. I qualified 14th, 2nd fastest Brit’ behind our new World Champion Lee Bertram. My run was good, I clipped a tree on the top section and nearly lost the front of the bike on one of the steeper mid sections but I was happy with my run.

Saturday. Race day. I was sitting three seconds outside the top 5. I knew with a clean run I’d be up there with the best of them. I took the Gondola up with my friend Dave, we watched some of the riders from our vantage point in the sky, the course was looking rough, the turns were blowing out, the riders were all looking fast but on the edge. There was talk at the top of the mountain about changing lines, inside here outside there. I already had my whole run mapped out and knew not to start messing my head at this late stage in the game. We decided to climb up behind the start hut and chill out away from the other riders.

Fastest qualifiers goes off last, there are 30 second gaps between each rider. Dave got ready for his run, I was left sat on a Snowboard ramp thinking about my run and wondering how the other 500 downhill racers had got on, they’re all done and dusted and I knew all eyes were looking up the mountain. Feeling calm I cleaned my googles one last time and headed down to get my bike.

Less nervous than qualifying, my descision was to not try and go any faster, just do the same run but without the two mistakes. The UCI official called me into the start hut, “Bonne chance”, 15 seconds, 10 seconds peep peep peep pee… I didn’t wait for the fifth pip and dropped out the start hut, my token gesture two pedal stokes, pre jumped into the compression and floated out the other side already doing mach 5. The run was started, I didn’t brake into the second corner and heard “holy sh*t” as I railed out of the wood, it felt faster than practice and faster than qualifying. The top section was brilliant, as good as I could have hoped for. On entering the woods ( and not clipping the tree) I dropped into a blind right hand corner to be greeted by a Frenchman stood ON THE TRACK and waving his arms!? I put the bike into a slide and drifted past him. I was going to fast to stop so I let off the brakes over the next drop and tried to make the corner, for a split second I thought it was going to hold, I was drifting towards the trees and knew I wasn’t going to make it. I hit the last pine tree on the exit to the corner and the bike stopped dead, I hit the tree with my shoulder hard. Still not believing what had just happened I climbed up onto the track thinking do you go back and punch the guy or carry on? I’d had a good top section so jumped back on the bike, I rode the bottom as fast as I could and crossed the line just outside my qualifying time. I was absolutely gutted, in downhill so many things can go wrong but I never expected that one. What could have been? Some people were suggesting a re-run but I was not in the mood, 29th  out of nearly 500 was ok but not what I wanted. It was good that Bertie won the Gold for Great Britain, Misser 2nd for Spain and last years Champ March was 3rd for USA.

Sunday. A long drive home through the south of France and back to rainy England and then north to cold and rainy Scotland. I must have replayed that crash in my head a thousand times already but it’s done and dusted. Last race of the season this weekend so I’ll try and set the record straight.
Next time.

11/09/08_AnnaM_Greengagement

greengagedlogo_s.jpg

Next week marks the start of ‘Greengaged’, the sustainability hub of the London Design Festival. The idea is to create a space where people working in the creative industries on sustainability can learn from each other, get fresh ideas and inspiration.  There are some really interesting events, debates, exhibitions, talks, workshops and seminars planned.  Our Emlyn (who’s taking over eco-warrior duties from me when I depart for my maternity leave) is hoping to make it along to at least some of the sessions.  The team behind the event have also said it’s going to be ‘taped’ (do you still say taped in this day and age?), blogged about and broadcast on the internet afterwards so if you want to be really, truly green about it and don’t want to travel to London to attend the event you can find out how it went by keeping an eye on this blog.

Watch this space for updates on what went on, who said what and what we’ve learned from the experience.

10/09/08_AnnaM_Projecting some support….

We’ve designed some projections for Tennent’s and the Scottish Football Association to promote the start of Scotland’s World Cup qualifiers hopefully taking them to South Africa in 2010.

The projections took place in Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow city centres and showed footage of last year’s Euro qualifiers and a number of messages highlighting Tennent’s sponsorship and support of the national side.

Check out the viral that was projected as a moving image here.

We found our man.

Thanks to everyone for keeping their eyes peeled for us anyway.

01/09/08_AnnaM_Have you seen this man?

These shots were taken at the Scotland v Italy game at Hampden back in November 2007.  If you know who this is or if this is you then please call us on 0141 222 2999 or email anna@stand-united.co.uk.

Thanks a lot.

22/08/08_AnnaM_Big match result

After much pre-match hype  (mainly from the client side) Tennent’s seasoned pro’s were put to the sword by Stand’s young guns, winning by five spectacular goals.

A fine performance by Emyln was tempered by a scything tackle on his own man - Craig Wilson, who was on his way off to the oxygen tent before being up-ended from behind no less.

The rematch is next week, this time we’ll take pics or might even have some graphics for you.

21/08/08_AnnaM_The big match

Well, the boys in the office have been in training for tonight’s ‘Big Match’ against the Tennent’s Lager Lovelies Lads.  Craig Stewart’s already sporting a rather nasty injury but is doing the right thing and not pulling out of tonight’s game.  He’s a real trooper that boy.  Craig Stewart’s war wound

A news update on the result will follow tomorrow.  Expect bruised egos,  frayed tempers and broken relationships.

13/08/08_AnnaM_Needing energised ?

13/08/08_AnnaM_How about some simple living ?

Another design hot off the presses is a promotional piece for Enkelt who build innovative, eco-friendly housing. The client wanted to show their business plan in a more interesting manner - I think we’ve achieved that.

Have a look at the finished article on our portfolio page.

11/08/08_AnnaM_wwww.weruntogether.com

Maggie’s just sent me a link to this site and I have to say it’s such a simple idea that works really well.

weruntogether.jpg

Anyone who knows myself or Maggie will know we’re no Paula Radcliffes. We’re joggers, at best, but we like to train for and run jog the Women’s 10k every year so consider ourselves to have SOMETHING in common with old Paula.

weruntogether2.jpg

Nike’s approach to sponsoring athletes, versus events, has allowed them to have some ownership over and right to talk about the Beijing Olympics, without being an official sponsor. The little microsite that they’ve pulled together to drum up support for Paula Radcliffe , whilst building their brand at the same time hits the mark. It’s simple, easy to engage with, straight to the point and flattering enough to the participant’s ego to let them see which step of Paula’s journey their message of support is being attributed to.

The call to action, to see Paula compete on 17th August at 12.30am means I’ll be tuning in to see if her 92nd step (that’s the one my message has been assigned to) is any different than the 91 before or the 22,758 after it.

05/08/08_AnnaM_Stand new upstarts !!!

Seems we’ve got some new faces within the Stand design fortress, they come in the guise of Katie Eagles new senior account manager, she flies in from Burt Greener and is a most welcome addition.
Next are our two former sailors from Navy Blue, the effervescent Mike Brooke who’s going to be handling accounts and Craig Wilson, designer extraordinaire who has a penchant for tap and modern dance and was also nominated as Young Designer of the Year at this years Design Awards.

Don’t ask who’s who.

08/06/08_AnnaM_Who Should I Cheer For?

With Scotland, England and Northern Ireland all failing to make it to Euro 2008, this site helps you pick another team to support, using rather unusual selection criteria.

05/06/08_AnnaM_How happy are you?

I stumbled upon this site and found it rather interesting. Check out how happy your country is versus the rest of the world or just within Europe. Us grumps, here in the UK don’t come out too well despite the rather high standards of living we have versus other parts of the world. It’s also possible to carry out a survey to compare your Personal Happiness Index versus the world average - sobering reading indeed. It seems that money really can’t buy you love, or in this case, happiness, but in any case, it’s still worth a read.

05/06/08_AnnaM_Stand win HWL pitch !

Stand has just won a four way pitch (something we’re ecstatic about !) to continue our brand development of the Healthy Working Lives awards scheme which we rebranded last year. The contract is for one year, where we’ll be acting as brand guardians with local authorities as well as day to day dealings with the HWL marketing team.Yvonne Powell, Marketing and Communications Manager at the Scottish centre for Healthy Working Lives said “I’m delighted to be working with the team at Stand, and look forward to continuing the development of the Healthy Working Lives brand with them over the next twelve months. Their commitment and enthusiasm for building our brand played a key role in awarding them the contract.”
